Can AI run offline?

Yes. Some AI models can run entirely on local hardware without sending each request across the internet.

Offline can mean

Model stored locally
Information processed locally
Response generated locally
No cloud request required for that task
AI is software. If you have the model and enough computing power to run it, some AI tasks can happen without an internet connection.

Why would somebody run AI offline?

There are several reasons, although offline AI is not automatically the right solution.

Privacy

Information can remain on equipment you control.

Reliability

Some tasks can continue even when internet access is unavailable.

Control

You decide when the model changes or how the environment operates.

What is the trade-off?

Running AI locally means taking responsibility for the infrastructure.

Hardware

Larger or faster models may require substantial memory or GPU resources.

Maintenance

Models, software and operating systems still need to be maintained.

Capability

The best cloud models may outperform smaller models that can reasonably run locally.

Start with the business problem.

Sometimes the answer is AI. Sometimes it is automation. Sometimes two existing systems simply need to communicate properly. And whenever business information is involved, privacy and data ownership should be part of the decision.
